Hello Sandi, the best thing to do is to let him drink water first before he gets in the pool, limit your swimming activities for him too. Too much of something is bad, at least 30 minutes or less. Some dogs gain obsession in certain activities due to lack of exercise. Let him have a walk instead of swimming.

I am worried. Our lab, stanley loves to swim and swallows tons of water during. He comes out of the water bloated beyond recognition…im worried about water toxicity and electrolye imbalance….seizures….etc. I hate to stop the activity he loves so much but i’m quite concerned.
Any ideas or experience with the same thing?

It’s better to rinse using hands while gently washing the dog. A strong hose can scare the dog thereby discouraging him from any more hosing.

What about just rinsing Fido with a strong hose? Will it get to the skin and help reduce a portion of the smell? I realize soap cleans better, but one can’t shampoo that often. Thank You. Steven Kays

Damn, awesome website. I actually came across this on Ask Jeeves, and I am stoked I did. I will definately be returning here more often. Wish I could add to the post and bring a bit more to the table, but am just absorbing as much info as I can at the moment.
